Zachariah might have the troubles of going against Captain Jaggery since he is a black man and even though slavery is gone in Rhode Island, Captain Jaggery is still very clever. He also might have trouble staying alive until they reach Rhode Island.
The difficulties Zachariah would have is that he is a black man, and black men were not welcomed in most communities then. He would not be allowed to speak his true opinion, bu, even if he did, the judge and jury would not listen to him. A perfect example of this is in at the book "To Kill a Mockingbird." In this novel, there is a trail againsts a black man and a white man. You can probably figure out who wins because of the black man's rights versus the white man's. (That book is highly recommended) But, even if there were no problems, Zachariah would STILL have no chance of winning.
I agree with Adina, black people's rights were taken away still back then, Also I think since Captain Jaggery was the captain of a ship, and Zachariah was just a cook that they would take Captain Jaggery's side since he was white and he was a higher rank then Zachariah.
Zachariah would have a load of trouble pleading guilty to the court as a black man to a white officer. The racial debates back then were not fair so the black people were considered not a citizen.
Like Louis said, black people's rights were taken away from them well, because they were black. If Zachariah TRIED to get Jaggery to court, the people would probably say that Zachariah was a black man and Jaggery was a Captain of a ship. So most likely, Zachariah would be proven guilty for being a black man.
I agree with Louis, not only is Zachariah a black man and The Captain is white, but Captain has a higher class ranking than Zachariah. People in that time period, weather it was a slave-free state or not, believed white people more than black.
