Question #5

Given the power held by the captain of a ship during this period in history, do you feel Charlotte had a fair trial?  Defend your answer.

  1. I don't think she has a fair trial because again, Captain Jaggery is a captain of a successful ship (for traveling at least.) and Charlotte is a girl, and I'm not trying to be sexist, I just mean back then girls weren't taken as seriously as today.

  2. Charlotte DEFINITALY did not have a fair trial. Captain Jeggery didn't let her tell her story at all. Charlotte I think was going to tell about the captain saying to keep the dirk under her bead and that is why he probably didn't let her speak her mind.

  3. I DO NOT believe that Charlotte had a fair trail because there was barely any evidence against her. She owned the dirk that killed Hollybrass, but did she have time to go to her cabin and get it while she was on the mast? I think not! That is why it was an unfair trial. I also think that she was not able to say what was on her mind, even though I know she could make herself innocent, given time and opportunity. Captain Jaggery was an unfair judge.

  4. Jason~ Who do you think is the true murderer? I believe that either Jaggery or Zachariah are. Jaggery because he is already a murder and Zachariah because he wanted revenge.

  5. I do NOT think Charlotte hadd a fair trial because there was barely ANY evidence against her killing Hollybrass. She did own the dirk that killed him, but she was on the mast while he was kiled. How would she still be up there and be able to walk to her cabin, lift up the matress, kill Hollybrass, and climb back up the mast? Captian Jaggery was a TERRIBLE judge.

  6. I think Charlotte did not have a fair trial because she never had any evidence that she murdered Mr.Hollybrass except she had the dirk that was used to kill him. Captain Jaggery used that as an advantage and played his every move right. He knew she was a girl and that she was confused so, he was careful with everything he said and he made her turn out guilty.

  7. Charlotte didn't have a fair trial because at that time, girls-especially young girls- had no power. Given the Captain's power and the clues of the murder, she had absolutely no way to win.
