Question #3

Charlotte chooses to lie to the Captain about the person who gave her the dirk?  What motivated her lie?  What would you have done in that situation?

  1. I think that she should of told him the truth because he was the only one I would of trusted and i would of never trusted Zacaraiah

  2. She did not want to cause trouble for Zachariah because on page 47 chapter five, Zachariah's kindness flashed through her mind that first night she came aboard the ship but also didn't care for the black man, because he had been most unpleasantly forward but the severity that had crept into captain's eye's as he asked his question gave me a pause.I did not wish to bring trouble to Zachariah . No doubt he meant well. Thats why she didn't say it was Zachariah so she said Mr.Grummage gave to her instead.

  3. She didn't want Zachariah to be blamed. Zachariah was a kind man and she didn't want him to be blamed.
Instead of Zachariah she said Mr. Grummage. I would have lied too about the dirk.

  4. What motivated her lie was that she may if trusted Zachariah a little bit when he said that Captain Jaggery was dangerous and he is a little loopy. I would of told captain Jaggery becuause I only trust Zachariah a little bit and he may of down something with the knife....

  5. She lied because she might not have fully trusted the Captain. She may have also thought that Captain Jaggery would punish Zachariah and she didn't want him to be because he was only trying to help her. She told the Captain that Mr. Grummage gave to her because she might have been upset with him for leaving her here alone.

  7. I believe that Charlotte lied to Captain Jaggery about who gave her the dirk because she like Zichariach and was worried that he would be punished if the Captain found out he gave a 13-year-old girl a harmful weapon. I would lie too, for Zichariach is a kind friend who just wanted to keep me safe.

  8. Charolotte did that because, deep inside, I think she trusts Zachariah, even if she doesn't admit it. Her motivation to lie was that she doesn't want to see anyone get hurt. After she heard the story of the "arm beating" she wouldn't want anyone else hurt, even sif it is just a scratch. I probably would have done the same thing because the story of the arm made me almost cry and I could just image if Captain Jaggery didn't want that, he could easily get VERY angry.

  9. I believe that she thought that the captain would punish anyone for carrying a knife. In that situation, I would have done the exact same thing as Charlotte. I would not want Zachariah to get hurt on my account, and as Mr. Grummage was not under his control, I would've said that he gave it to me, so no one would've gotten hurt.

  10. Charlotte choses to lie about the dirk because she didn't want to cause trouble to Zachariah. Zachariah's only job is to be a chef on the boat and if he loses it he won't have a job at all. If I was in that situation I wound have told the truth because that would be the right thing to do. I would have been scared to dealth if a stranger came up to me, gave me a knife and told me to defend myself.

  12. I think what motivated Charlotte's lie is that she didn't want to cause any drama. I think she is fond of Zachariah, but just hasn't spent enough time with Zachariah. I would've done the same thing Charlotte did. I don't want to cause any drama. Plus, if I ever needed Zachariah he wouldn't care. For instance, if I saw a crew member kill someone, and Captain Jaggery said I needed a witness and Zachariah saw it. If I confessed about the dirk he wouldn't of said he saw it.

  13. Jason, why would you have lied about the dirk to Captain Jaggery?

  14. Charlotte chooses to lie about the dirk because she didn't want to get Zachariah into trouble. Zachariah is a good guy and Charlotte didn't want to blame him. If I were in that kind of situation I think I would have told the truth because that would be the right thing to do and if someone gave me a knife and told me to defend my self that would be freaky.

  15. Charalotte decided to lie about Zachariah giving her the dirk because he has wanted to give her friendship and in her mind I think she decided that it was a good idea to give him a chance. She said that another part of the crew did it and thought that she was helping Zachariah. It is hard to say what i would do because i dont really know what that situation would be like. I would say that I found it or something.... I thinj it was nice of charalotte to protect Zachariah but that wasnt fair to blabe an inocent person!

  16. I ment: blame an innocent person..... not Blabe an inocent person! Sorry!

  17. I would've lied because I would've chosen Zachariah as my friend and I wouldn't give him away since I actually trusted him. After everything that has happened, I would trust the Captain less and less every time I see how people react to him. I think Charlotte felt the same way as what I just wrote.
