I think that Zachariah thought he wouldn't be welcomed is because he ran away without permission and his parents would be angry for him to be showing up after so many years. So he is scared to go and see what their reaction would be.
Zacharaih told Charlotte that because he is not ready to return home. Since he is not ready, he had to come up with a lie. That was probably the best one that he could come up with because it made the most sense. I, personally, would have told Charlotte the truth because she is a good girl and deserves the truth, no matter what happens to her or what to outcome of knowing the truth will bring.
I believe that it's because the "white men" enslaved them throughout the years, and they would be angry that he ran away with the people who enslaved them. They would be angry that he betrayed their ancient customs, and joined the English.
I think that he told charlotte that because he was not physically READY to return home and he might think that his family might be ashamed of him because he ran away becausehis home was too small.
Well, once you run away, you and your family will never be the same. Also, he doesn't know if his family is slaves and where they are. So I think he wants to but he doesnt know if his family will ever like him for what he did to them
Zachariah abandoned his family. He left them and it probably hurt them. He is worried that his family won't forgive him for what he did. Also, what if his family doesn't like what he became?
The reason Zachariah had told Charlotte that, was because he had run away from his own family when he was little. If I were Zachariah I think I to, would be a little bit freaked out because if I returned home after many years had pasted, what my parents would do. I think that his parents would be extremely upset with Zachariah because they didn't like actions of running away.
