Question #3

When Charlotte dressed to go ashore, she felt pinched and confined in her old clothes.  What does her clothing symbolize to her?

  1. Charlotte's clothes symbolize that she deserves to stay on the boat; it is her TRUE home. When she put on her "proper" clothes, she hated them. She needs to be dressed in comfortable clothing to work and not be too hot in the sun. The clothes she would wear before going on the voyage basically did not fit her anymore. They did not fit because she has changed completely. Not just her size, but what is inside of her. she is a sailor at heart. That is what truly matters.

  2. Her clothing represents the snobbiness that she left far behind her when she joined the crew. Being back in the tight, uncomfortable clothing makes her feel like she is no longer a member of the crew that she once was part of. She feels like she left a world that symbolized fun, adventure, and freedom.

  3. Her clothing tells who she is and who she stands by in life. Her sailor clothes felt really good to her because she was used to them and she felt that her place in life was on a ship. Her old woman-like clothes where saying that she belonged to follow orders and not think for herself.

  4. I think that when she was in her sailor clothes, she felt comfortable in them, she felt like she could be herself. When she changed into her old clothes, she felt tight, like she couldn't express herself.

  5. Your clothing symbolizes soho you are, and when Charlotte wore her sailor clothes it made her feel good, until she had to put on her "Proper" clothes, I think that when Charlotte dressed to go ashore that she felt extremely uncomfortable because she wasn't showing who she was, also that her old clothes are supposedly suppose to make you look mature, unlike sailor clothes, which are more ragged and loose.
