This interpretation makes sense because Charlotte is about to die. She was about to die because she slipped and fell and almost went over board! When this happened, she saw the figurehead and remembered her first day on the ship. When she saw this "angel" she knew that she would be alright, no matter what happened to her or to anyone else on the Seahawk.
Nothing really supports the figure head as being an "avenging angel". As the bow dips with waves on the seas the bird picks up foam in its mouth becoming a rabid bird that hates everything. Also the bird has its wings swept backwards, which to me makes me think of a bird that is killing and eating its prey.
The figure head's appearance in chapter 21 was supporting how Charlotte described it in chapter 1 because it symbolized Captain Jaggery's death. I disagree with Ian because the avenging angel could be carrying the captain to his afterlife.
I think it supported it because there were alot of people aboard the ship who wanted revenge on Captain Jaggery. One of them was even Charlotte herself when she found out who Captain Jaggery really is. Also, the ship dips in the water and it shows that the hero may fall down sometimes but it always gets up. it is the symbol of what is right.
All of the crew all wanted revenge on Captain Jaggery because he is obviously insane and evil. The figure head to Charlotte was an "Avenging Eagle" which she hung from at the end of chapter 21. Charlotte also wanted to have revenge on Captain Jaggery once she figured out his real plan. When Jaggery died, Charlotte avenged anyone who had to suffer from the wrath of Jageery.
I think it supported charlottes claim in chapter 1 because it is where Jaggery fell to his death so it symbolizes his death and I agree with Ian because maybe Jaggery was the birds prey.
I think in these chapters the Seahawk is the exact opposite as it was in the begining. Before Charlotte thought of the Ship a beauty! Now she is learning that everything isn't working out and the ship is keeping her hostage to stay! The outside of the ship still looks the same but on the inside she realizes its home. Before she was dreading going on the ship because it would be a nightmare. And so far she is rifgt! But Charlotte is becoming more and more like a salior everyday. J think she id starting to realize she isn't the same girl she was and the zseshawk has a totally different meaning now!!!

ReplyDeleteIan, why do you think that Charlotte thought that, even though you do not?

ReplyDeleteSeeing the figure head reminded her of an angel in ch. 1 and in ch. 21 it reminded her of an angel avenging Captain Jaggery's wrong doing.
