What do you think Charlotte meant at the end of Chapter 8 when she said, "But the storm was--at first--man-made"? To what different kinds of storms might she have been referring?
I think Charlotte meant that some kind of bad event made someone very angry.Someone most possibly being the Captain because Charlotte has heard numerous rumors of Captain Jaggery horrible cruelty.Example in chapter 4, page 46 to 47 Zachariah explains to Charlotte " Mr. Cranick did not tie a knot to Captain Jaggery's particular pleasure. The captain punished him Mr. Cranick. Punished him hard....." Later on in the story Zachariah reveals what happened,"Captain Jaggery said Mr. Cranick laboring arm was by his rights. Miss Doyle, Mr. Cranick has but one arm now. He was that much beaten by Captain Jaggery, who , as he said himself, took the arm himself."
I think she was reffering that when a storm is out the crew members are out working on the deck on the ship prepared for the storm comes they start doing what they have to do to keep on its side, and that everything is secure.
I think Charlotte was referring to the feelings and events that have happened to the crew and the captain. Since it turned out to be a very ugly scene, she thought of it like a storm.
When Charlotte says that the storm was man made i thing she meant more like all the bad things that are happening on the ship made the commotion in the sea erupt.

ReplyDeleteI'm thinking that this means because of all the commotion, the whole entire crew made this storm. (But I'm not too sure about this answer)
