I think that shows that she is changing into a sailor. However, she quickly takes them off because she thinks she is becoming a more sailor. So basically she wants to be a regular girl.
I believe this means that even when she's on a ship surrounded by men, she still wants to retain a small remainder of the life that she once had, so she's still a bit hesitant of leaving the perfect little world that she left behind in Liverpool. This means that even if she is still intent in remaining as a lady, she still shows enough development to take the clothes from Zachariah. If she had not shown any development, she would have either not accepted the clothes, or accept them and get rid of them at the first chance she got.
Charolotte is changing because she is becoming even more lady-like. After taking the sailor suite and puttingnit on, she quickly decided to take it off. I believe that no offense was intended to sailors, just that she believes in a proper way to live. She is used to sanitary living spaces and clean clothes, so what are you supposed to expect from her? Would she quickly change into a tomboy and LOVE dirt and filth? I think not!
I thin her character is getting more crew-like. Then she all of a sudden had a "proper lady-like" realization. I bet she is going to wear it sooner or later.
Charlotte is starting to become a sialor since she liked the clothes Zachariah gave to her because on page 66 and 67 it says Later on, I admit-I tried the garments on, finding them surprisingly comftorable until, shocked I remembered myself. Hurriedly, I took them off, resolving not to stoop so low again. She took them off and felt herself again, so she will probably wear them again later in the story.
Charlotte's response of the gift that Zichariach gave her showed she was becoming a sailor. Though when she tried them on, she realized who she was and changed back into the Charlotte Doyle that first entered the ship.
Like Adina said, Charlotte is changing because she is becoming even more lady-like. She is not just suddenly going to change and love more boy like things, but I think at some time that she will wear it.
Charolotte gets a little confused. She is still a perfect lady like 13 year old, but deep down inside, she is going to want it. She wears it and then very quickly decides that it isnt the girl she is. It shows alot about her character saying thatt she really is going to slowly change but in her mind she is being stubborn and doesnt like that very much.
I think that Charlotte is finally learning that almost everyone is friendly and kind no matter what classy level they are. She is not being judging people anymore and is becoming normal and fitting in. Of course, she will have to get used to it, but I think she will like the new way of life for a while.
I think her response to sailor's clothing made her think that some people can be very generous, even people who are African- American, and the gift made her feel that he was truly her friend and even though her response was putting them on for five seconds and taking them off was still a resonse right?
