Irony is a twist of words or events that turns out to be the opposite of what is expected. What is ironic about the captain's saying to Cranick, "I wondered where you'd gone. Not to hell as I'd hoped - but here"?
The thing that is ironic about the captain's saying is that he never even thought that Cranick would be on his ship. He thought he would be gone but in surprise, he was on the ship as a stowaway.
What is ironic about the captain's saying was that he thought never of having a stowaway on his ship. Like maria said, he thought he would be gone but in surprise, he was a stow away.
Like Maria and Sara said, Captain Jaggery would never had imagined that there would be a stowaway. He didn't even know Cranick was still alive, much less on Jaggery's turf.
I think that he always thought that Cranick would have been gone after his punishment, but when he found out he was a stowaway on his ship it was his time.
Kassidy makes a good point, Captain Jaggery always thought that Cranick would be executed after what he had done. Captain Jaggery really didn't even know that he was a stowaway, but when Captain Jaggery found out that Cranick was a stowaway he knew that he was done for and well, killed him.
